What lifestyle characteristics come to mind when you think of success?
The leather jacket, the machismo, long hair, a throng of groupies, waking up with mysterious bruises?
Perhaps trendy clothes, a Mercedes Benz, reserved seating at an exclusive restaurant, front row tickets to the theatre? Hanging with Pimp Daddy, calling everyone 'your bitches', going all gangster on some back street homies ass? (whatever that means) Having time to listen to your friends and family, escaping the rat race, being able to plan instead of react, making a positive difference in people's lives?
Perhaps you're on a beach, with a rum cocktail in one hand and cigar in the other, gorgeous people all around you to perform your every whim? Maybe you want to dress in a t-shirt and track-pants, slum around the couch all morning, before getting glammed up and hitting the clubs later on tonight? Do you see yourself laughing at the establishment, because you got kicked out of school after grade 12?
What about roaming the plains with your chosen tribe, surviving off the land, celebrating each day for what it is and communing with the great spirit around camp fires ever night? Do you imagine opening the gates of hell to unleash a torrent of revenge on everyone who's rubbished you throughout you life? Do you live in a world where soul, compassion and artistic integrity are expressed freely in a nurturing and caring environment? (love beads are mandatory) What about being apart of a corrupt government, which oppresses its citizens for personal gain and satisfaction?
We can sit back and judge the value systems of each lifestyle, but that's not where I'm going. It's about acknowledging that success is a cultural construct. Are we actually able to choose what success means to us personally? If our future is limited by our past experiences then surely we have no hope. But successful people tell us they chose to be <insert favourite characteristic here>. The role models and mentors we choose to follow influence our actions, thoughts & dreams. So we either need new ways of thinking or different experiences, but imparting knowledge and organising life changing events takes time and money.
One thing is obvious, if we don't consciously desire a successful lifestyle, the predominant culture will determine it for us. Dreams have power my friends - choose them wisely.
